Light off… Light on

28 March 20h30 – 21h30

While driving through the suburbs this week fetching and carrying for the extra murals I noticed a new set of posters adorning the poles in between the government parties. What, a new party? What on earth are they thinking..but apparently they are! Last night while I was Googling on animals that hibernate (the topic for my kids for the following day) I thought it prudent to look up information on this new poster. I am well pleased that I did – don’t be in the dark about “Vote Earth” log onto www.earthhour.org. (remember the 2 harry the hatmen are important here).

VOTE EARTHIt became a discussion point at the dinner table as to why the hibernation project / topic had changed to Earth hour instead. In my household the lights off idea extended into making it a power off idea maybe it will be the same in yours? It must have been bringing back memories of the rolling blackouts experienced last year. My younger child thought it brought a unique opportunity to make it into a camping weekend. I would have to concede that the camping notion (at home) certainly was appealing…particularly because a flushing toilet was nearby.and a hot shower (I don’t feel too guilty because we have solar power).

Imagine the games we can dust off while the wind up torches are charged, the stories that can be regailed while hands cast character shadows on the tent walls. The endless possibilities of estimations of how many appliances aren’t being used, how many emails will be waiting when we power up again and how many friends and families in different continents are playing the same darkness game.

I think we have all been brought up to believe that saving money is key to a better future. Perhaps what hasn’t shared the same light is the saving of energy? Let’s do our part to raise our own family’s awareness of climate change, investing in renewable energy and the basic principles of less is more!

Let us hear of how you and your family will be voting on this issue.
